Ever since traces of pharmaceuticals were detected in the water, developing technologies that are capable of elliminating these substances became a pressing challenge. The so-called emerging contaminants (ECs) are potentially harmful both for humans and the environment.
Since September this year, the University of Alicante's Institute for Water and Environmental Sciences, together with Valencian companies and agencies and the UNESCO Water Institute (Netherlands), is participating in European LIFE "Empore", aimed at developing efficient technology to elliminate 99% of ECs

Scholarships that look for to promote the access, the progress and the university international mobility of students condiscapacidad. Foundation Universia will allocate 200.000 euros in scholarships for those students with disability, Spaniards or resident foreigners in Spain, that find enrolled in educations of degree or máster.
The granting of the scholarships of Mobility will resolve with date end on 7 November 2016 , whereas the remaining modalities will resolve on 2 December 2016 . The Services of Support to the People with Disability of each university will serve of link between the students and Foundation Universia.
The open registration period for course "Equal treatment and non-discrimination in the European Union" starts in September. The course, validated for 4 free-choice credits (only for former programmes), will be held from 5th October to 6th November 2015. Registration can be done at link.
University of Alicante lecturer José Ángel Berná, has developed a new technology that allows smartphones both to emit distress signals and provide the exact location of the device without mobile phone coverage. Until now it has been a prototype system as an App for Android devices that uses the Wi-Fi mobile interface to emit distress and a receiving device that detects the signal at several kilometres distance..
This system’s most direct field of application is to support the tasks of search and rescue teams in environments where there is no mobile phone coverage or emergency situations such as earthquakes, tsunamis ... where the terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure is shut down.
Already it is opened the term of this new announcement that foresees 20 scholarships of international mobility of 6.000 euros each one, 20 scholarships of máster of 3.000 euros each one, 2 scholarships of investigation of 25.000 euros each one, 2 scholarships of doctorate of 12.000 euros each one and 10 scholarships of study and sport, of 3.000 euros.
The applications for the scholarships of mobility, máster and postgraduates and studies and sport, will have to be headed to the Foundation ONCE between the 13 of Julio and on 3 October.

Publication of book "LA RESPONSABILIDAD SOCIAL EN LAS UNIVERSIDADES ESPAÑOLAS 2014-15" (Social responsibility in Spanish Universities) with the participation of the University of Alicante
This book was developed by the University Institute for Financial and Social Analysis (IAES) to assess the current situation of Spanish Universities in terms of Social Responsibility and analyse their evolution on several areas during the last four years. An eight-item conclusions section is also included in the book.

This project has been developed by CITIO association (whose members include UA Architecture students David Fontcuberta and Paula Villar), Lima's National University of Engineering and Madrid's Technical School of Architecture, together with local companies and public agencies. It has been awarded with the 2016 City to City Bardelona FAD prize.
Fontcuberta and Villar participated in this initiative as members of a University of Alicante Project for University Cooperation for Development that is coordinated by UA lecturer Elia Gutiérrez and funded by UA's Office for International Presence and Cooperation.
Suicide is the third most frequent cause of death among teenagers between 15 and 19, the risk being higher among bullying victims and perpetrators. For this reason, UA researchers have launched a crowdfunding campaign to set up Life! Platform, where users will be able to anonymously red flag suicidal messages and behaviours detected in social networks.

Last Monday, a group of Alicante geographers visited our University to perform real-time mapping of the main areas hit by the earthquake. The aim of the initiative was to pinpoint buildings and any other structures that need to be secured by the country’s emergency teams. It was coordinated by the Geographers Association of the Region of Valencia.

Today, Juan Llopis (UA Vice President for International Relations) held an institutional meeting with the representatives of HUMREV (Human Rights in a European community of values), a project that is carried out within the European Union's Erasmus+ project

Following the reception at the Alicante City Council and the "Reflection forum on the current situation and challenges of Romani People", which took place on 12 April at the Alicante City University Venue, last Monday the Gender Equality Unit held an event to fight stereotypes against romani people at UA's Gender Equality Square.

This new joint project is aimed at fostering reading and developing the little ones' environmental awareness through literature.

"Ask away, I won't bite you! " is the name chosen for this day aimed at increasing visibility of people with disabilities. The day will be devoted to analysing their view on four main topics: "the city, leisure and free time activities", "couple and family life", "education and employment", and "entrepreneurship". This initiative is aimed at fostering Equal Opportunities and organised by the UA Equal Opportunities Observatory and the Alicante City University Venue.
The website provides resources and information relevant to the detection, prevention and intervention in the face of possible situations of sexual harassment, gender harassment and harassment based on sexual orientation that may arise in our work and study environment. It highlights, the most important elements of the procedure followed when the specific Protocol for these situations, adopted last June by the Government Council, is activated.
The Spanish Committee of UNHCR, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, grants a certificate as COOPERATORS to the students of the Area of Arabic and Islamic Studies of the University of Alicante in recognition and thanks for their support in the Syrian Emergency. The students collected 1,200 € during the Third Arab and Islamic Cultural Conference.
